The preface of a book gives the author’s subject, scope, or aim. Section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants certainly does all of that and more. Here is an intro and overview of “The Lord’s Preface” in D&C 1.
Even though it's the opening chapter, D&C 1 wasn't given first chronologically—but it lays the foundation for everything that follows in the Doctrine and Covenants and the Restoration.

Most everyone who has read the Book of Mormon is familiar with Moroni’s promise or challenge. But there is one word that to me, adds a different dimension to our whole experience of determining the truthfulness of this wonderful book. 😀
One of the most important “exhortations” from Moroni is to have us remember how merciful the Lord has been in our lives. That message really seems to be the bookends of the Book of Mormon along with everything in between. 🙏🏻 I
