Each of us is learning something--even the prophet! Mom and I talk about our personal spiritual journeys and the things we've learned recently.
Why is it so hard to see things from a perspective other than our own? Our perspectives are shaped by our life experiences and our biology – some people are color-blind, for example. As a result of these differences, no two people see the world in exactly the same way. And yet, when it comes to differences of opinion on issues that we really care about, we are quick to demand that everyone else see things the way we do. Psychologists call the ability to see from a different vantage point “perspective taking.” Is perspective-taking the key to overcoming polarization in society? In this podcast episode, we learn how our brains are wired to process information differently – some think in words, others pictures. We get practical tips on how to practice perspective-taking during difficult conversations. And, we learn about the potential pitfalls of focusing only on developing empathy to bridge differences, because some empathy leads to helping, some does not.
In this episode we'll talk about 1 Nephi chapters six through ten. We’ll review the account of Nephi and his brethren returning to Jerusalem to retrieve Ishmael’s family, and the challenges that they faced. We’ll talk about the importance and power of forgiveness, especially as we seek for greater personal peace. We’ll discuss how the Lord, being aware of events that would happen two thousand years later, inspired Nephi to take action that would prevent future difficulty. These principles can give us comfort and help us understand our value to God, and His amazing love and concern for us.

We’re excited to share with you this interview with George Handley, a professor of humanities at BYU. George recently published a fascinating and moving intellectual biography of Lowell Bennion. As we’ve learned more about Bennion, he’s begun to loom large for us as a truly inspiring figure who models some of the best of what our faith tradition has to offer. He was an educator, humanitarian, and practical philosopher who had an outsized impact on the Church in the 20th century, even if few might recognize his name today.
